Beekeeping
Spring Keeping
When venturing out to care for your buzzy little charges it is
always wise to keep in mind these simple little tips for a successful and stress free day.
Don't leave home without:
- A well stoked smoker to dazzle their senses and dampen their enthusiasm to protect the
hive at all cost.
- A hive tool who's chief intention is to separate the well stuck hive boxes from their
attached counterparts. Bees are very proficient with propolis and consider it the insect's
answer to duct tape.
- Hat & Veil. This is not intended for any ceremonial purposes. If you have long hair,
deep ears or bristley whiskers...they like that and will burrow in and sound a resonating
invitation to the others. This is intended more for the novice who may find it difficult
to remain calm under the curious onslaught of the guard bees. Experienced beekeepers are
free to wear a willing swarm about their person and dance with the queen. If you are that
comfortable with the bee to man relationship...you have earned the right to be charming.
- Along with the hat and veil is the glove. These are designed to be worn tightly around
the upper arms so that nothing can crawl inside. It is also recommended that you check
them for holes every now and then. That is not something that should be discovered while
holding a 75 pound box of surplus honey.
- Speaking of crawling inside...It is recommended that you clamp your pant legs shut also.
Failure to do this could lead towards the same demise as found in #4.
